You notice who has not eaten, who went quiet, who is holding something they have not mentioned. Warmth is not a thing you perform — it is closer to how you are built, and people settle when you are in the room.
The difficulty is that the noticing does not switch off. You end up absorbing states that are not yours, and you often find out how tired you are only after everyone else is looked after.
The Empress in her better seasons has learned that generosity from an empty place is not generosity, it is depletion wearing its clothes. The care you extend outward is not more deserved than the care you owe yourself.
